Due to the rigid soldering of the tapes in the HTS CroCo, small bending radii of HTS CroCos cannot be realized. To allow also for applications with spacial restrictions, e.g. in cable channels or data centers, an easy-to-use connector concept was realized to allow for low-resistive connectors between two HTS CroCos.

HTS CroCo connector concepts

Four different angular connectors with bending radii below 50 mm and contact lengths of 50 and 60 mm were investigated, as shown in Figure 1.
Connector I is a simple copper angle and serves as a reference. In all other connectors, additional REBCO tapes were added to reduce the resistance of the conncetor piece. In connector II and III, the additional REBCO tapes were aligned on the outer sides of the connectors, whereas they are aligned at the inner sidewalls for connector IV, shown in detail in Fig. 2.

Experimental tests of the connectors

HTS CroCo ends are just soldered to the matching ends of the connectors with no further preparation of the HTS CroCo ends.

All connector types were tested in liquid nitrogen.
It was shown that the use of additional REBCO tapes reduces the connector resisance significantly.
Connector IV shows connector resistances of ~ 40 nOhm, which results in a Joule heating power of only 0.36 W at these conditions.
